This depends on whether they are causing you any adverse symptoms or if other treatments such as medicine to to dissolve them have been unsuccessful. A consultation would be needed to establish the best procedure.

Depending on where your gallstones are, the type of surgery will be different. If the gallstones are in your bile duct then an endoscope is used to remove them. This involves the endoscope being past through your mouth. If your gallstones are in your gallbladder then you may need gallbladder surgery.

If you are a smoker you would be asked to stop you reduce the risk of chest infection which could slow your recovery.
